Geography

Hello, I am Miss Artuner and I am the Geography coordinator at Moston Lane Community Primary School. What I enjoy most about teaching Geography is learning about different parts of the world and their cultures. I believe Geography allows children to gain a better understanding of the world that they live in.

Intent

The geography curriculum helps children to provoke questions and provide answers about the natural and human aspects of the world and their relationship with one another. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. The geography curriculum at Moston Lane Community Primary School enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas. Moreover, by learning about different places and cultures, children will further appreciate and celebrate the differences between people around the world and indeed one another. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops and understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. We aim to inspire and maintain in children a fascination about the world and to promote their understanding of natural and human environments and the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

Implementation

This will be implemented through a series of knowledge and skill-based lessons with appropriate challenge and progression between each year group.  We ensure that lessons are relevant by allowing children to express what they already know at the start of each topic.  This also ensures that we are aware of the different starting points for each child.  Cultural capital is built both through the planning of lessons around experiences of the local area and the use of online resources for further fieldwork opportunities.  Cross curricular outcomes in geography are planned for, especially within writing. In Reception geographical knowledge is taught through ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’ guidance which aims for all children in reception to have an ‘Understanding of the World; people and communities, the world and technology’ by the end of the academic year. In years 1-6, the curriculum is taught through geographical skills and fieldwork, locational knowledge, human and physical geography and place knowledge. ‘What if…?’ questions within lessons deepen and embed geographical learning through the use of hypothetical scenarios upon which children debate and apply the knowledge they have learnt.

Impact

Throughout the school, children are encouraged to understand and appreciate their local area and its similarities and differences with other places in the world.  Fieldwork within the local area and the use of a wide range of sources will allow children to develop their geographical skills and provoke a wide range of child-led, inquiry-based questions.  Attitude towards and attainment in geographical learning will be reported annually to parents.  The impact of the curriculum will also be demonstrated through termly pupil voices, learning walks and displays.

Here you can find the 'Age Related Expectations' for each year group, which outlines what skills a child should be able to do at the end of each year. Children will be assessed against these expectations to see what they have achieved, and what they need to work on next.
