Physical Development

At Moston Lane we love to keep fit and healthy! We play outside every day and use all our muscles in a range of outdoor activities such as climbing on our climbing frame or riding bikes and scooters. We have PE twice a week, one session indoors where we will be focussing on gymnastics, dance or games and one session in the outdoor provision working on our fine and gross motor skills. For our indoor session in Reception, children are required to wear a PE kit and get themselves changed, which is great for their physical development! In Nursery we start PE in the Summer term and the children practise taking of their own shoes and socks. Before this the children practise their physical skills daily in a range of situations and complete lots of dance activities throughout the year linked to each topic we do.

We also understand in Early Years how important it is to develop our fine motor skills, which are our small-scale movements. These are essential for us to be able to become super writers! Every day we encourage the children to go to the ‘finger gym’ where there will be a challenge that requires them to use the small muscles in their hands and fingers to complete a task. This helps make their fingers and hands strong in preparation for writing. Some of these activities include using small lego, tweezers, tying knots, screwing and unscrewing, threading, pinching activities and many more! We also love dough disco at Moston Lane and complete this at least weekly, to help build up our muscles in our hands and fingers. In the Early Years we do run an out of hours learning club called ‘funky fingers’ where we complete a range of small scale finger gym activities, often in a competitive way to help engage the children.

A physical outcome that the children are required to achieve by the end of Reception, is to be able to dress and undress independently and to fasten and unfasten clothing. The best way children learn to do this is by having a go. We really encourage the children in Reception to get changed independently and to learn to zip up their own coats and jackets. We also encourage the Nursery children to put their own coats on and towards the end of the year encourage them to try putting their own shoes and socks on after PE. Please encourage your child to try at home fastening their own coat and shoes, this encourages them to become more independent and again promotes the development of their fine motor skills.
