Who are we?

Kingston, Abisola, Caleb, Ella, Esra, Blossom, Thandie, Ehi, Lola, Yano

The School Council is a group of children from each of our ten, Key Stage 2 teams.  All pupils in Years 3-6 have the opportunity to put themselves forward to become a school councillor and represent their team. Team elections are held and all children have the opportunity to vote at the start of the year. The child who has the highest amount of votes becomes their team representative within the school council.

To be elected onto the school council you need to be:

·       honest

·       reliable

·       caring

·       good at communicating

·       helpful

·       friendly

·       fun

·       respectful

·       supportive

·       a good team player

·       a positive role model

·       a good leader

What do we do?

The councillors go to meetings every Monday and Friday and take part in discussions. As a Rights Respecting School we have a right to share our views with adults ( CRC  Article 12 )and for adults to listen to what we have to say:

The councillors bring the views of the teammates to the meeting to ensure they are acting as the voice of the children. They also let their team know what was discussed and share feedback.

The school council have been involved in lots of activities this year. On a weekly basis they give out 2 awards to chosen children in the team.

1.   1. Top Dog Award – this is for a child who has gone ‘over and above’ in class and been ready, respectful and safe ( our three school rules)

2.   Lunchtime Legend – this is for a child who has been ready, respectful and safe during the lunchtime period.

Every other week the children present a ‘rights respecting award’ to someone who has respected the ‘right of the fortnight’

The school council were part of the interview process for our new Head teacher and have taught lessons on ‘rights’ to their classmates. They have led assemblies and activities for children in Key Stage 1, helping the younger pupils learn more about rights respecting schools. They have also made decisions around how to spend their allocated budget and this year have bought team trophies and stickers.

Our School Council aims to encourage children to:

have a “voice” and to share their opinions and ideas with others

develop confidence and responsibility and make the most of their abilities

prepare them to play an active role as citizens

develop healthy, safer lifestyles

develop good relationships and respect the differences between people
